Podium Presentation Title: BMI and Fracture Pattern as Predictors of Postoperative Complications in Midshaft Clavicle Fractures

Optimal management of midshaft clavicle fractures remains controversial. This study assessed demographic factors, injury pattern, and surgical technique as potential predictors complications. Smoking, diabetes, obesity, fracture pattern were hypothesized to be associated with increased risks complications following open reduction internal fixation (ORIF). Consecutive patients minimum 1 year follow-up at a single tertiary institution who underwent ORIF identified retrospectively from 2007-2019. Demographics, data, surgery characteristics, postoperative recorded. Postoperative separated into major minor based on reoperation status. Chi-squared statistics ANOVA was utilized significance level set p<0.05. 354 (average 38.0 + 14.6 yo) average 6.4 months. 288 male (81.4%), 116 smokers (32.8%), 14 had diabetes (4.0%). 157 transverse (44.4%), 147 oblique (41.5%), 50 Z-type (14.1%). 144 (40.7%) superior plating, 134 (37.9%) anterior 76 (21.4%) dual plating. occurred in 58 (16.4%), 44 (75.9%) (24.1%). Major non-union (n=5), symptomatic hardware (n=4), infection (n=3). Minor sensory deficits (n=25), superficial wound infections (n=11), delayed union BMI (kg/m2) significant for all (p=0.02 p=0.01, respectively) complication severity (p=0.01 p<0.01, respectively). Complications more frequently than fractures. obese compared normal or overweight patients. Fracture obesity Non-unions exclusively fractures, possibly due the reduced bony surface area contact. Obese may benefit most nonoperative management.
